Located in the Henderson County Historic Courthouse is the Henderson County Heritage Museum. It seeks to preserve history and educate visitors on the people, places, and milestone events that helped shape the lives of the people of Henderson County, North Carolina. The museum emphasizes the county’s pioneers through colorful exhibits, dioramas, educational programs, research, and collections that reflect how the people of the area responded to their cultural, educational, political, and natural environments.

The museum consists of six rooms and approximately 2000 square feet. The spaces are designed to be flexible and versatile as new items come into the possession of the museum. The Henderson County Heritage Museum offers a variety of rotating exhibits, making it a place that you will want to visit many times. One of their most popular exhibits is their very first exhibition titled Let Freedom Ring. It was designed to commemorate the service of the people of Henderson County who fought and lost their lives in the 250 years of armed struggles as they fought to make our land safe while striving for freedom from oppression. It spans the time period from 1940 until present, covering World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the War on Terrorism.

In addition to the Let Freedom Ring exhibit, they also have a variety of other exhibits and one of my personal favorites is the Golden Age: Shepherd Store Recreation in the Champion Hills Club Room. It was an exhibit conceived by Judy Abrell and is a recreation of the century county store where locals used to purchase goods and necessary items. The Henderson County Heritage Museum also offers a gift store for people to purchase replicas of some of the items showcased throughout their exhibits as well as local art and homemade goodies to take home and enjoy.
