The tall white pillars and picturesque backdrop nestled in between the fields of farmland and the Appalachian Mountains is the home of one of America’s great poets, writers, and editors, Carl Sandburg. Born in 1878, Carl Sandburg became known as a major figure in contemporary literature. He won three Pulitzer Prizes throughout his life and was highly regarded as the voice of America and at his death in 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson observed that, “Carl Sandburg was more than the voice of America, more than the poet of its strength and genius. He was America.”

The Carl Sandburg home is located in Flat Rock, NC. The 264-acre site includes the Sandburg residence, the goat farm, sheds, rolling pastures, mountainside woods, 5 miles of hiking trails, two small lakes, several ponds, flower and vegetable gardens, and an apple orchard. Carl Sandburg and his family lived in the house from 1945 until Mr. Sandburg’s death in 1967. Carl also owned and operated the Chikaming Goat Dairy. At its peak, there were over 200 goats and they were renowned for their quality milk production and superior breeding.

The admission is fair with the cost for an adult being set at $5.00 for ages 16 and older, $3.00 for seniors 62 years or older, and free for children age 15 and under. The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site also has a museum on site with a collection consisting of over 320,000 museum objects and over 800 linear feet of archival material. The museum contains a variety of books, artwork, personal artifacts, and other objects that were collected during a lifetime spanning 89 years and are a distinctive reflection of twentieth-century history. Aside from the historical value the Carl Sandburg home has to offer, the beauty and landscape are a rarity in the modern world and it provides a glimpse at the exquisiteness that can come from the isolation located deep in the heart of the mountains.
