The Stompin’ Ground is a term usually applied to a person’s home area or place where they feel especially secure and safe. It’s no surprise then, why this particular phrase was used as the name for this local music and dance venue. The style of music and dance reflected here is unlike anything you could experience elsewhere. I’ve called the Appalachian Mountains home for many years. It’s the place where I was born and raised and the Stompin’ Ground of Maggie Valley is one of the few places left where I could be fully immersed in the Appalachian culture. I watched my father perform for many years on that stage and came just about every weekend to watch the American group dancers perform a variety of styles mostly local to the area.

Located in a large barn, the Stompin’ Ground features a spacious lobby that highlights and showcases the history of mountain dance and the progression of the culture throughout the years. The large dance floor and seating area provide ample room for everyone and the décor is something reminiscent of old-time country songs. It is one of the few places I know of that truly captures the heart of the south and the culture most have left behind.

The Stompin’ Ground is also home to an enormous clogging competition held the last weekend of October. Dressed head to toe in their outfits and with their dances perfected over years of training, it is truly a sight to see as hundreds of mountain cloggers take turns performing to the music played by the live band. A variety of music is played paying homage to the bluegrass roots of the Appalachian Mountains as well as contemporary country hits. The large dance floor provides for plenty of room and the warm and welcome atmosphere will have even the most timid visitor joining in by the end of the night. Here, there’s no pressure to fit in. It’s just about having fun and having a good time. Cowboy boots and hats are welcome for those seeking a true southern experience. Be sure to check in advance their hours of operation as they are seasonal, usually starting in early spring and ending in late fall.
