Folkmoot is a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating many cultures in one community. The organization has a long standing history in western North Carolina. Their year-round programming initiatives have been made possible by the people of the community, the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, and the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. This year they are taking us to Spookmoot, a Halloween extravaganza, taking place in the historic Hazelwood School located in Waynesville, NC.

Spookmoot will start Wednesday October 28th and continue through Sunday November 1st. From October 28th through October 29th, the haunted historic Hazelwood School will host an event filled with dark tales and haunted areas as you tour the old school house. They will have food trucks, pumpkin catapults, and three haunted areas. Hours of operation will be from 8 pm until midnight and tickets are $15 per person. Children must be 12 years old or older to participate in the Haunted Hall.

On October 30th, Spookmoot will be hosting a Kids Carnival from 5:30pm until 10:30 pm. The location will be the Folkmoot Friendship Center or the old Hazelwood School. Admission is $5 per person and free for children under the age of 2. There will be spooky themed games and activities for the children with food and refreshments available including refreshments for the adults. The Haunted Hall will be geared toward the kid friendly audience and there will be a costume contest, photo booth, and classic Halloween films on a big screen. This event is centered around family fun and great way to celebrate Halloween for children of all ages.

On October 31st, Spookmoot will host a Halloween Fling & Costume Party. The party starts at 8pm and lasts until the bewitching hour. This event is also located at the Folkmoot Friendship Center and admission is $50 per person age 18 and over. It signifies the return of the legendary Halloween Party, which haunted the valley in years pasts. Halloween night is centered around the adult entertainment and features a costume party, an adult themed haunted hall, movies, music, and food and beverages with specially themed cocktail drinks.

November 1st is the Pumpkin Catapult with the Catamounts. This event will be from 1pm until 4pm on Main Street at Miller Street in downtown Waynesville. A $3 donation will be requested for each pumpkin catapulted. The students of Western Carolina University and my alma mater are currently constructing the catapults to be used for this event. Awards and various prizes will be given out throughout the day as you enjoy watching pumpkins being hurled down an empty street in downtown Waynesville.

Spookmoot has done a fantastic job in the past of bringing families and the community together to celebrate the holidays and festivities. This year, they have truly out done themselves and I can’t wait to see all the things they’ve planned for my favorite holiday in my hometown. It will be a night to remember and one that next Halloween is sure to have some competition to live up to.
