I’ve already explored the awesomeness of the Grove Park Arcade and discussed its architectural greatness and historical importance in Asheville but fitting it into brews week would’ve been quite a challenge were it not for Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar. Yes, the name is long and unwieldy but what it offers is unlike any other brew shop in Asheville. Part used bookstore, part wine bar and all kinds of great fun, this Grove Park Arcade classic is definitely not to be missed out on if alcoholic merriment is what you seek.

With wine by the glass or by the bottle, this unique shop offers both the fun of a bar and the relaxed atmosphere of a high-end coffee shop all in one. Curl up on one of the comfortable nooks scattered throughout the 2000 square feet of space and grab a book from the elegant shelves while you do it. This isn’t your tattered neighborhood used book shop. These books are in pristine condition and elegantly displayed. They’re also fairly cheap if you just have to take one home. My inner bibliophile may or may not have geeked out hard at this shop.

The vintage range was pretty significant with beers also available for those who prefer it. The menu is several pages long and perfectly explained. For those who waffle between drink choices, buckle up. There are many to chose from but luckily the Book Exchange is comfortable enough for you to relax and enjoy several before you have to slink home.IMG_6698
Need to sober up? Say hello to the espresso bar. Let me just say that Starbucks has nothing on these sugary concoctions. Need something to eat? If you expect to find bar food there, you’re going to be significantly disappointed or pleasantly surprised, depending on your preference. They have an hors d’oeuvre selection that includes snacks like pita bread, cheeses, and specialty dips.

Some things to know before you head down to the Book Exchange: if it’s a weekend, the place can get insanely crowded. Plan accordingly. If you have a larger group, they do take reservations and it might be a good idea to go ahead and make them to ensure you get seated. They also tend to close up the bar a little early so don’t expect to show up right before closing time and expect to get served anything alcoholic.

Overall, this is a great experience to enjoy either by yourself or with a friend. Grab a book, take a seat, and enjoy a glass of wine at the Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar.
