What do you get when you mix good beer and great science? The Colburn Museum’s Beer City Science Pub of course! I feel like all museums should begin their tours with Colburn’s “grab a beer and look around” philosophy. It definitely lends a casual feel to a place that can often feel like a stodgy affair. To top it off, this is one of those guilt-free events where you can learn a little something while happily drinking beer, courtesy of Asheville Brewing ,and also getting to learn from an expert in the field of whichever event you choose to attend. This is an annual event starting somewhere toward the end of February and finishing up midsummer with new subjects every week.

I was lucky enough to attend the Lucy & Friends lecture with Dr. Don Lewis, a researcher in craniofacial evolution. I had never even heard of craniofacial evolution before but I learned a lot and was privileged enough to get a crash course while sipping on a nice brew. This is an adult only event, so leave the kiddies at home and enjoy something a little nerdy.

You’d be amazed how time flies when you’ve got free beer on tap and a lot of interesting things to look at. The casual atmosphere lends itself to striking up interesting conversations with those around you and you float from exhibit to exhibit. Since the topics switch out on a regular basis, you won’t have to fear that you’ll get bored of seeing the same thing over and over again. Check out Colburn Museum’s website for their schedule of events and pick out what really strikes your fancy.

The main event, the lecture, was even delivered in a casual manner that felt more like a conversation than a college course. Since the event is fairly long, around three hours give or take a few minutes, it would be a good idea to grab some food ahead of time to make sure you have something to absorb the free beer. Since the museum is in Pack Square, there are plenty of restaurants near the museum to choose from, so eat up and then head on to Colburn Museum to enjoy their Beer City Science Pub.
