One of my all time favorite musicals is making its debut on the stage of the Asheville Community Theatre in western North Carolina. Sweeney Todd is a British classic with a dark and twisted side to the normally cheerful and upbeat setting that most musicals have.

Sweeney Todd is set in 1846 in London, England. The musical tells the story of Benjamin Barker, a barber wrongfully convicted of crimes and sentenced to penal transportation by the corrupt Judge Turpin, who wanted Benjamin Barker’s wife for himself. Fifteen years later, Benjamin Barker returns to London under the alias of Sweeney Todd determined to exact revenge on the corrupt judge. He opens a barber shop above a failing pie shop owned by the resourceful Mrs. Lovett. Together they exact their revenge on the citizens of London, quickly making a name for Sweeney’s new business and building a savory reputation for Mrs. Lovett’s meat pies with their new mystery ingredient.

Sweeney Todd is based on the adaptation by Christopher Bond and the music and lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim. It is a Tony Award winning musical that features one of Sondheim’s darkest and most intricate scores. After the 2007 movie release featuring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton, it has quickly become a fan favorite for those interested in the more dark and edgy tales that Tim Burton is known for. If you haven’t had a chance to see Sweeney Todd, I highly recommend going to watch the Asheville Community Theatre’s live production of this sinister musical for a fully immersive experience. A lot of attention and detail went into the casting and sets making it a one of a kind experience.

The Asheville Community Theatre gives their production of Sweeney Todd an R rating due to the adult language and violence portrayed throughout the show. They will be showing the production from October 7th through October 30th. For more information visit:
