Up a winding road that doesn’t seem to lead to anywhere, you’ll find yourself somewhere special among the rolling mountain hills, spectacular waterfalls, and lush greenery of the surrounding forests. Cashiers, North Carolina is a small sleepy town on top of the world, which boasts one of the most beautiful, scenic golf courses around. High Hampton Inn & Country Club’s public course is a great way to while away an afternoon and has everything you need for an afternoon on top of the world. Though the inn and many amenities often attract long-term guests, those visiting Asheville who have a fondness for both nature and golf will be pleased with the 18 hole course on the sprawling acreage in Cashiers.
Booking a tee time is fairly simple so long as it’s not around one of the popular summer holidays this seasonal resort celebrates with all the gusto of a real-life Kellerman’s. All the same, make sure you call at least a few days in advance to get the time you want and during the more popular times of year, build it into your trip’s itinerary in order to guarantee your play. We booked our time for early morning and found the staff very knowledgeable and accommodating at the crack of dawn. (Can you tell I’m not a morning person?) Freshly mowed greens greeted us as our morning kicked off to a pitiful start.
I am the first to confess that golf is not even remotely my best sport but I’ve been known to take a whack at it from time to time. I fear the golf maintenance staff would have cried if they would’ve seen the number of divots I put on the tees. Luckily for me, my companions were much better golfers than I, so we moved at a reasonable clip. Though the holes were challenging in some places, this course has a relaxing atmosphere that doesn’t make it impossible to end up with a reasonable score if you’re a fair golfer.
The scenery and the quietness of the natural surroundings really did give a nostalgic feeling to the whole place. With thick forests on either side of the fairways and a beautiful cliff face watching over the whole front 9, it was easy to fantasize that the course sprung up like a meadow in the middle of the forest. Number 8 was even located next to the first of two small lakes that dot the course and was incorporated nicely into the scope of the play (If you happen to find my pink ball in said lake, you’re welcome). All in all, if you want to enjoy beautiful scenery and fair play in a lovely setting, High Hampton is a must-see course during your stay.
